What is an OSCE?

It is an objective structured clinical examination in which you skills and knowledge will be tested.

When it will be conducted?

This the second part of the NBDN Diploma in dental nursing examination. Students will be automatically allowed to appear for this examination when once they pass the written examination.NEBDN will notify you at the time of the written exam results when you will be appearing for this examination.Normally these are conducted twice a year in the months of February and July.

What is the structure of this part of the examination?

You will have 15 stations, spending 5 minutes at each station.

  • Some stations might have acting patients with whom you will be communicating as per the instructions given at the time of the exam. Here you will see an acting patient, examiner. Examiner will be marking your communication skills and knowledge.
  • Some are written stations. You will not have an examiner or an actor in these stations. You have to answer the questions given at that station.
  • Some stations might be testing your skills, such as mixing dental materials (alginate, filling materials, etc)

Are these tasks different from what I learn?

This part of this exam is mostly focusing on the skills you gained during one year of your training at your dental surgery. The tasks you perform at your dental surgery will be simulated during the examination.

Do I need to pass all 15 stations to pass this part of the examination?

You need to perform considerably well in all stations.

Will there be any breaks in between the stations?

You will have few rest stations in between actual stations. You will be provided some refreshments. However you might not be allowed to leave the examination hall except to the toilets with an accompanying examiner.

Do I need to pay any additional examination fee?

There is no need to pay any additional examination fee for this part of the examination. This will be included in the examination fee when you applied at the time of the examination application. However for re-sit you have to pay an additional charge of £250.00.

What I have to do after I pass the examination?

Once you pass OSCE, you are eligible to register with the GDC once you receive a certificate of Diploma in Dental Nursing from NEBDN.
